Keloid scars usually grow larger than the wound itself. They are raised and dark, and they can continue to grow after the wound has healed. They develop when too much collagen develops at the site of the wound. Keloids can have side effects such as interfering with movement, pain, and itching.
Introduction
Recently we had a chat with a customer, let's call her 'L' and she had some excellent questions with regard to treating old (+4 years) keloid scars and she agreed to allow us to use her questions to help answer yours.
The Conversation
L: Hi! I was just wondering if the rejuvaskin scarsil silicon scar gel is effective to use at the same time as the silicone sheets for a very old keloid scar (>4 years old)? I have the silicone sheets already, but am unsure whether using the gel will be as useful for old scars compared to new scars.
Scintera: Ok. So Yes, ScarSil can certainly be used in conjunction with silicone sheets and will improve the skin texture due to the combination.
L: May I please clarify that the gel sheet is to be used at night (during sleep) and the gel to be applied once after removal of the sheet in the daytime? I notice it says best for paediatric and face, but the one I have is on the chest. And unfortunately not paediatric either! Is this still ok?
Scintera: Yes, we have had positive feedback with customers using ScarSil on scars between 2-5 years old giving great outcomes. Of course, ScarSil can 100% be used on any area of the body.
L: And (sorry for the numerous questions), how much wider do the margins have to be to cover the keloid (i.e., 1 cm all around from the border of the keloid)? I am planning to cut the sheet as the scar is only a small section?
Scintera: Use of the Silicone Sheet at night is a recommendation as it will remain in the affected are for a longer undisturbed period of time. Day time use is also fine. Using ScarSil after removing the sheeting will yield best results. A margin of 1cm is ideal and all that is needed. And never apologize for asking excellent questions. 😀
L: Also is there an age limit to the scar where these products have been found to be less/not beneficial?
Scintera: We are not aware of and have not encountered a limit on when or if the products become not as effective.
L: And is the rejuvaskin scarsil scar gel more superior than the scar esthetique cream? Which is your recommendation in my case?
Scintera: ScarSil is our recommendation for your scar, Scar Esthetique is another excellent product that also targets skin discolouration and is often used on its own but again, can be used as part of a complete scar care regimen. Here is a link to a detailed comparison between ScarSil and Scar Esthetique.
L: I can use the sheets at night and the cream in the morning? And for how long can I use the cream for?
Scintera: You certainly can if you wish. (Sheets at nights, Cream in morning) and there is no fixed term and the cream will always work to improve the condition and texture of your scar.
L: Thank you!
Scintera: You are most welcome. Keep up the great work taking care of yourself and enjoy the rest of your night 🌔
