Skincare: “Trick" Or “Treat" Edition

August 24, 2022

When it comes to skincare, there is a lot of information out there and some of it isn’t so great. This Halloween, we’re busting some common myths about skincare that are way more “trick” than “treat” to your skin. Here are three of our favourite skincare tips you should try and three skincare tricks you should avoid.

Skincare Treat 1: Hydrate Inside and Out

You might think it’s enough to hydrate your skin on the outside, but it’s just as imperative to also make sure you are drinking enough water daily. Ensuring your body has proper hydration and nutrients will help it glow from the inside AND outside as well. Drinking water will also help your body flush out toxins that can be detrimental to your skin.

Skincare Trick 1: The Best Way to Get Rid of a Zit is Popping it

Believe it or not, this is one of the biggest myths when it comes to caring for your skin. Many people believe that popping pimples like blackheads and whiteheads is the best way to get them to go away. However, this tactic can cause irritation in the affected area and even lead to scarring. Instead of popping, stick to topical treatments with benzoyl peroxide, retinol, or salicylic acid. If you suffer from severe acne it’s best to consult a dermatologist, and for those of you who have fallen victim to this trick in the past and now have the scars to prove it, ScarSil is a great product to help you get rid of acne scars.

Skincare Treat 2: Always Wear Sunscreen

This might seem like an obvious item on a list of tips for healthy skin, but you’d be surprised how often people forget or neglect to wear sunscreen when going out in the sun, especially if it’s just a short duration or if it’s overcast out. One of the best ways to sneak sunscreen into your daily regimen is to swap your regular foundation for foundation or tinted moisturiser with SPF.

Skincare Trick 2: Vitamin D Only Comes from the Sun

A common — and dangerous — myth related to your skin is that sun exposure is the best way to get vitamin D. There are actually a number of ways to get your daily dose of vitamin D without damaging your skin and increasing your risk of skin cancer - like diet and supplements.

Skincare Treat 3: Wash Your Face More

Again, this might seem like an obvious tip, but many people don’t realise that the best thing you can do to keep your skin healthy is to regularly wash your face. Washing your face in the morning removes bacteria that may have settled on your face while sleeping and washing your face at night removes the dirt, grime, and particles of pollution that you’ve gathered throughout the day. A comprehensive anti-pollution cleanser is the best way to remove the day’s grime from your face!

Skincare Trick 3: Expensive Skincare Products are Better

Just because a product is expensive doesn’t mean it’s better than another, more affordable option. You don’t need to pay thousands of dollars on skincare products. Instead, talk to your dermatologist, read the labels, and educate yourself on the best ingredients for skincare.

This Halloween (and all year), avoid the tricks and stock up on giving your skin all the treats! Your skin will thank you.
