How do we know if scar treatment works? Well, the only reliable way, that is accepted by doctors and scientists, is the randomised, controlled clinical trial. Randomised means the trial participants don’t know whether they are receiving the treatment or a harmless placebo. Controlled means that results in the participants receiving the treatment (the treatment group) can be compared with those who received the placebo (the control group). Statistical methods are used to ensure that the two groups are well matched and the results are able to be verified as significant or not. Such trial are the gold standard.
There are other ways to compare treatments but they are much less meaningful or reliable. Many products used on skin are tested in so called ‘Panel Tests’. You probably recognise them from advertisements that say something like: “We asked 20 volunteers to test our new, whizz-bang skin beauty cream, Age-Away, and eighteen said they noticed definite signs of improved skin tone and reduced wrinkles!” Wow! A 90% improvement! Such results are more often a case of wishful thinking than any real, lasting effect.
So, what about treatments to reduce or eliminate scars? Most are ‘tested’ using unreliable methods such as panel tests, if indeed they are tested at all. Only one type of treatment has been demonstrated to be effective in a large number of randomised, controlled clinical trials.
