Introduction

What do you know about silicone? Did you know that silicone is the gold standard for scar treatment? How about its role in scar management products? Silicone is proven to work on even the oldest and most severe scars. After a scar is formed and the wound closes, you can begin using silicone products to reduce the appearance of your scar.

1. How Scars Are Formed

After a cut or surgical incision, the wound closes and a scar begins to form. As your skin heals itself, excessive water loss can occur for up to two years. This water loss causes dehydration in the skin and informs the surrounding cells to produce collagen. This is the body’s way of combatting dehydration. The more water loss that occurs from a wound, the more collagen is produced. Collagen is what scars are made out of and when too much collagen is produced, a raised scar appears. This thickened scar can turn into a keloid scar if left untreated.

2. How Does Silicone Work on Scars?

When a silicone sheet or silicone scar gel is applied to a raised keloid scar, it stops the water loss and collagen production that leads to large, conspicuous scars. This key ingredient will prevent the scar from thickening and rising. This results in a flatter, softer, and less noticeable scar. As an added bonus, silicone sheets and gels also help protect against bacterial infections.

3. Silicone Sheeting

Silicone scar sheets are a non-invasive method for managing and reducing the appearance of various types of scars. Here’s how they work:

Hydration and Moisture Regulation: Silicone scar sheets create a protective barrier over the scar, maintaining a hydrated environment. This moisture helps soften and flatten scars, promoting a more even and smooth appearance. By preventing excessive moisture loss, the sheets allow for optimal healing.

Collagen Normalization: Collagen is essential for skin structure and scar formation. Silicone sheets help normalize collagen production, reducing the risk of excessive scar tissue formation. This is particularly beneficial for hypertrophic and keloid scars, which result from overproduction of collagen during healing.

Gentle Pressure: The sheets also provide gentle pressure, further improving the appearance of raised scars. By regulating collagen and maintaining hydration, they contribute to scar reduction.

In summary, silicone scar sheets create an ideal healing environment by maintaining moisture, regulating collagen, and applying gentle pressure, resulting in improved scar appearance.

The Scar Fx® Silicone Scar Sheets come in a variety of different shapes and sizes to uniquely treat specific areas on the patient’s body. Each sheet is soft and pliable with one sticky side that comfortable adheres and contours to any area affected by scarring. Apply the sheets daily for 1-4 months and watch as the appearance of your scars reduces for a lifetime!

4. Silicone Gel

RejûvaSil® Silicone Scar Gel contains a blend of liquid silicone, Vitamin C, Emu Oil, and Squalene to improve the appearance of scarring. The silicone in gel acts the same way that it does in sheets. It stops the water loss and collagen production that cause raised and noticeable scars.

Most silicone gels on the market contain only silicone, and therefore leave your skin feeling sticky and uncomfortable. RejûvaSil® has a unique blend of ingredients allows for the gel to dry quickly and not remain sticky after application. RejûvaSil® Scar Gel is an alternative to silicone sheets and is available in bottles from 10-30 mL. It is an easy, cheap, and non-surgical way to drastically improve the appearance of your scars.

5. How to Use Silicone Products

Always talk to your doctor to help develop a regimen for treating your scars. Often it is best to use multiple products to supplement one another in order to treat scars effectively and quickly. Many of the Rejûvaskin® products work well with one another to combat serious scarring. A doctor might give you specific instructions on when and how to apply gels, creams, or sheets to maximize their effectiveness. Either way, silicone is the most effective ingredient to help reduce the water loss and collagen production that cause unsightly scarring.
